Navagraha temple is dedicated to nine planets namely Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. The cluster of nine temples is located in the surroundings of Kumbakonam Tamilnadu, also called as Temple City.

Temple History:
Lord Shiva is the main deity in this temple, with a shrine dedicated to planetary deity Navagraha. Most of these temples were built during the reign of Medieval Cholas between the 7th and 11th centuries, with five-tiered raja gopuram, the gateway tower and wall enclosing all shrines of the temple.
As per Hindu mythology, Sage Kalava was suffering from serious health issues along with leprosy. He prayed to Navagrahas – nine planets. The planets were pleased by his devotion and offered him the cure. Brahma, the Hindu god of creation angered with the act of nine planets claiming that they have no power to offer boons to humans. He cursed all the nine planets to suffer from leprosy and sent to earth in Vellurukku Vanam, the place were modern-day Suryanar Kovil is located. These nine planets prayed to Lord Shiva to get rid of their curse imposed by Lord Brahma. Impressed by the planets prayer, Shiva appeared in front of them, lifted their curse and assured them that the place belongs to them and they need to stay here and grace their devotees.
Nine planets decided to stay on the earth in a different locations and continue to grace the devotees. Each temple is located in a different village and considered as an abode of one of the Navagrahas. Majority of the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Surya temple is dedicated to Graham.
