Sai Baba Background:

Shirdi Sai Baba’s date of birth and his birth location remains unknown and no defective evidence available to prove it. Most of the information available now is derived by the book called Sai Satcharitra, written by Sai Baba discipline named Annasaheb Dabholkar, also called as Govind Raghunath / Hemadpant. Real name of Sai baba also remains unknown – the name Sai Baba is given to him Mhalsapati, when he arrived to Shirdi – a small town located in the West Maharashtra.

The name Sai refers mendicant, also termed as God. This Sai Baba denotes Holy Father or poor old man. Some of the famous Sai Baba becomes famous as saints and spiritual figures, some of the saints are Mhalsapati, Upasni Maharaj, Saint Bidkar Maharaj, Saint Gagangiri Maharaj, Saint Janakidas Maharaj and Sati Godavari Mataji.

Early Days:

Sai Baba Answers – Although Sai Baba’s origin is unknown, historical studies suggest that he was born not far from Shirdi – with name of Haribhau Bhusari to the Muslim parents and grown under the Hindu Guru, Venkusa of Selu.

Sai Baba arrived to the village of Shirdi in the Ahmednagar District of Maharashtra, India. He was about sixteen years old and stayed here for 3 years and disappeared for unknown reason. Later in 1858, he came back to Shirdi, after the Indian Rebellion of 1857. As always, he led a simple life sitting under the neem tree and meditating the whole day. Villagers were wonder-struck to see such young lad practicing hard penance without minding the weather condition.

His presence attracted the curiosity of locals and religious people like Mhalsapati, Appa Jogle and Kashinatha. Some villagers considered him mad and started throwing stone at him. During his absence, some believed that he lived with many saints and fakirs and worked as weaker, some claimed he fought with the army of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

Return to Shirdi:

Sai Baba returned to Shirdi in 1858, he first appeared at Khandoba Mandir in Shirdi. The priest Mahalsapati welcomed his as saying “Aao Sai”, from then he was called as Sai Baba. Around this time, he adopted his famous dressing style – knee length Kafni robe and a cloth cap. Ramgir Bua started that Shirdi Sai Baba was dressed like an athlete with long hair. The dressing style contributed to Sai Baba identification as Muslim Fakir.

Upon arrival, Sai Baba lived under a neem tree for four years, often wandered in Jungle. He always lived alone, just performing medication for long time. After that, he started to live in an old and dilapidated mosque, survived by begging alms and receiving itinerant from Hindu and Muslim visitors. In the mosque, he maintained a sacred fire, which called as “dhuni” from which he gave sacred ash “Udi” – visitors believed that the ash have healing and apotropaic powers. Shirdi Sai Baba offered spiritual teaching to his visitors; he recommended Hindu’s to read Ramayana and Bhagavat Gita and Holy Quran to the Muslims.

In 1910, Sai Baba fame and new about his healing powers started to spread in Mumbai and several parts of India. Numerous people started to visit to get his blessings and to share their problems with the holy saint. They built first temple for Sai Baba at Bhivpuri, Karjat.

Final Days and Death:

In the year 1918, Shirdi Sai Baba told to his devotee that he would leave his body soon. Later, he had heavy fever and stopped eating. On 15 October 1918, he breathed his last, the date coincided with Vijayadashami. He was buried in Shirdi, later it become worship place called as Shree Samadhi Mandir or Shirdi Sai Baba Temple.

Teaching and Practices:

Sai Baba opposed all issues based on the religion and caste. He encouraged his devotees to follow their religion and customs, read holy books. He was inspired by the philosophy of Bhagavad Gita and urged his followers to follow it in their own life. He always insisted his devotes to follow simple life, helping others and loving every being without any discrimination.

In his teaching, Sai Baba emphasized the importance performing his duties and being faithful regardless of the situation. His philosophy also had numerous elements of bhakti. The three main Hindu spiritual paths — Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, and Karma Yoga — influenced his teachings, Sai Baba Answers.

Worship and Devotes:

Shirdi Sai Baba Movement being in the 19th century. Because of him, Shirdi become very popular place and visited by Hindu Pilgrimage. The first temple was built in 1922 at Kudal, Sindhudurg.

Today, Shirdi Sai Baba temple is visited by 25,000 pilgrims and during festivals, thus number reach up to 100,000. Sai Baba temple is maintained by Shri Sai Baba Sansthan. The statue of the temple was made out of Italian Temple and seen draped with royal cloth, wearing gold crown and fresh flower garlands.

 As per rituals, four Sai Baba Aarti are held inside the Samadhi Mandir.
